MOOSE/CARIBOU HUNTS

Our moose and Caribou hunts will be based at Chandalar Shelf airport.  Chandalar Shelf is located at milepost 238 of the James Dalton Highway. Hunters find it more cost effective and easier to fly commercially to Fairbanks and rent a vehicle than drive to Chandalar Shelf. This not only gives you a more flexible schedule .  It also provides you the ability to do your shopping in Fairbanks, saving shipping costs and extra airline fees. Some rental companies have a restriction on the Dalton Highway for their vehicles so we strongly recommend you make arrangements prior to your arrival in Fairbanks. Please see our lodging and gear rental page for information on car rental.
We will have our DHC-2 Beaver as well as our super cub based here for the month of September . With these two aircraft, Bushwhacker Air can accommodate large and small groups. Both aircraft will be on wheels. Bushwhacker Air will be providing air service for moose and caribou hunts in unit 25 A.
The caribou herd in this area is the porcupine and central arctic herd. Alaska Fish and Game puts these herds at 200,000 animals , making it the second largest herd in the state. There is a limit of two caribou per person in this area.
We also provide air support for self-guided moose hunts.  Unit 25A might not have the highest moose population in the state but there are trophy animals taken every year in this area.
* Bushwhacker Air will do our best to put you as close as possible to the area of your choice but it is YOUR responsibility to choose the location.

INTERESTED IN A MOOSE/CARIBOU HUNT?

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. All hunts start and end in Chandalar Shelf.
2.When packing for your hunt you will need to keep your personal gear to a
maximum of 50 lbs. plus a rifle. ALL GEAR WILL BE WEIGHED BEFORE
DEPARTURE. Because of rough terrain hunters might be flown to an area
in the beaver and then shuttled to the hunting area in the super cub. Hence
the need to keep gear to 50lbs. plus a rifle. This is an FAA regulation
   and cannot be exceeded.
3.It is recommended you add a day on both ends of your trip for bad
weather. This will also give you time to deal with
your meat at the end of
   the hunt.
4.Black bear/grizzly bear/wolf and wolverine may also be taken on these
   hunts at no extra charge.
